Selected Work
A cross-section of our practice — hospitality and resort design, luxury and systems-built residential, waterfront masterplanning, and institutional and wellness projects rooted in the land and community of Hawaii.
Hakuone — Kaka’ako Makai
The masterplan for Kaka’ako Makai is organized along an elevated pedestrian park overlooking Ala Moana Park and Diamond Head beyond. Hospitality and luxury office space line the waterfront with a concentrated retail and cultural center woven in. Elevating the entrances separates service and automobiles from the promenade experience — and obviates the need for extensive civil engineering to repair the failing wharf and pilings.
Modesthouse
Modesthouse is a crafted, systems-built luxury home drawing from mid-century modern and traditional Japanese architectural themes and techniques. Its interior layout, finish materials, and relationship to the landscape each play a role in the home’s timeless elegance and poetic beauty. The predesigned systems approach removes many common unknowns from design and construction — putting extraordinary design and craftsmanship within reach without the lengthy, expensive pursuit of design excellence. Planning and permitting are typically completed in two to three months from first contact.
Kalalau Addition
This addition to a mid-century home on the slopes of Koko Head creates a lush sanctuary of inspiring spaces and stunning views. Simple roof planes float along the classic lines of the existing house, while a rational grid of Douglas-fir timbers defines generous volumes and frames surprising overlooks, patches of sky, and continuous views of the nearby mountains. A simple palette of wood, concrete, and glass achieves a refined elegance that belies a common nature.
